Orchid - Epidendrum Reed stem Yellow

Plant without a name tag. In bloom but towards the end of it’s glory.


Identified with the help of John Stanton from: “The Orchid Trail” in Morrisville, NC.


Many hybrid cultivars makes it almost impossible to be certain of the cultivar but it seems to match photos of: Epi. (Venus Piars x Pac vista) x Arlene Yamada.

HEIGHT X SPREAD: 2- 2.5 ft. x 1 ft.

PLANT TYPE: Orchid -Evergreen
GROWTH RATE: Moderate
TEXTURE: bold
LIGHT: plenty of sun, even direct sun light.

WATER: let dry between water, well drained. 
high humidity 60-70 %

SOIL: Pot in fine bark media mix with high moisture retention.
As observed in Coastal NC.

BLOOMS:   frequently. reeds bloom only once. If not removed after blooming they will produce keike (baby plants on the reed)

FRUIT  AND  SEED: N/A, propagate by  division or keike

KEY FEATURES: tall reeds with blooms at the ends. Need support if insufficient light. If plant does not bloom, give more light.
A year cycle in the life of ...... at Mooring Hitch

Obtained in 4” tall plastic pot with bark and peat mixture, with two blooming reeds. New root growth showing.
Keep plants as obtained until blooms fade. Recommended to keep plant in small crowded pot.
-Re-pot in 5” aircone plastic pot with Orchiata mix. Water once per week, high afternoon/west light.
-January 2014: (1) 5” aircone pot now with spike.
-Jan.2015: (1)5” aircone pot, (1) 4” plastic (#825 &#826 cuttings mix). Mature plants with spike. Doing well.
Jan. 2016: (1)6” aircone pot, (1) 5” plastic (#825 &#826 cuttings mix). Mature plants with spike. Doing well.
