Genus comprises about 60 species in the Asia tropics from southern India to New Guinea and the Philippines. They are known as “Lady’s slippers” because of their pouch like lips.  All Paphiopedilum have flowers of a similar plan. Lacking pseudobulbs, they prefer a moisture-retaining epiphytic compost and medium light levels.

As observed in Coastal NC. BLOOMS:Deep Burgundy Lateral sepals are fused into a “synsepal” that is usually small and more or less hidden behind the pouchlike lip. Dorsal sepal large and showy. Petals may be round or linear, curved or undulate. Mid winter to early spring. FRUIT AND SEED: N/A, propagate by division. KEY FEATURES: Hybrid, a cross between: Mottled leaves.

Use weak strength fertilizer, less than other orchid varieties. -First bloom open Sept. 24, 2012 -Plant in bloom June 27, 2013. Gifted plant to Paula Beattie- June 2013 -Dec. 3, 2014 Paula return the plant to me, not prospering in her home. 3 leaves and no roots. Repotted in 2” plastic pot with orchiata
