Angraceum is a large genus of about 200 species with green and white flowers. Plants are monopodial growth habit are mostly epiphytic.


The Darwin’s orchid from Madagascar is well known because of its large white flowers with very long spur. It grows in the warmer forest at low elevations and is now protected where it still occurs. It grows easily in cultivation and has been raised from seeds on many occasions.

BLOOMS: waxy white star flower about 7” diam. and  up to 13” long spur where the nectar resides. Fragrant at night. Winter bloomer.Multi flora as plant grows and matures.

FRUIT  AND  SEED: N/A, propagate by  division.


KEY FEATURES: Easy to grow once good roots are established. They do well in bark and in baskets while some of the larger plants do best in pots.

Plant received as 2” pot. Re-potted in 4” plastic pot with Orchid bark mix.

Jan. 8, 2014: (1) 4” wood basket with orchiata mix. Place among vanda type close to humidifier, water more than once per week, watch root growth to determine frequency.
Jan. 2015: (1) 4” wood basket, doing well.
Feb. 2017: (1) WB 4”, doing well.
Moved to 6” WB with Orchiata, several aerial roots growing. Water almost daily as per vandas. Some leaf spotting in winter ??
Jan 20, 2019: “A” First bloom fully open about 7” diameter, spur measures 10.5 inches.
March 23, 2022: Added (2) new plants, (B & C). Arrived in 4” pots with large bark and aerial roots. Repotted all 3 plants into clay 5”, 51/2” with ceramic beads and water bottom plate to keep moist. 
June, all repotted plants in clay and beads are doing great, nice roots.
Dec. 20, 2022: Plant C bloom open, 12.5” tail/ 6-7” across bloom. Keep bottom plates with water, specially in summer.
Nov. 29, 2023: Plant (A) doing well, no spikes. Plant (B) has 2 spikes with 3 blooms developing total. Plant (C) has 2 spikes and 4 blooms forming total.
Dec. 21,2023: First bloom open. 
All but one bloom Open by Dec. 25, 2023. (B) flower 6.5” diameter. (C) flower is 5.5” diameter. Both have tails of 11.5” and look alike. Flowers open a creamy/ green color and within 1 or 2 days change to white.
