Phalaenopsis gigantea is native to Borneo. Named for its gigantic leaves that easily exceed 60 centimeters in cultivation, Phalaenopsis gigantea is the largest Phalaenopsis species. The massive leaves are pendent, leathery, broadly rounded, pale silver green and shiny on both surfaces.

PLANT TYPE: Orchid -Evergreen

GROWTH RATE: slow

TEXTURE: bold
LIGHT: filtered light, low. More light, more blooms

WATER: moist but well  drained, 
high humidity 60-70 %. Does not like cold temperatures.
SOIL: Pot in Orchid mix  or sphagnum moss
As observed in Coastal NC.

BLOOMS: white with brown lavender markings. Fragrant. Summer-Fall. 
Age to bloom about 7-8 yrs.

FRUIT  AND  SEED: N/A, propagate by  division.

KEY FEATURES: Extensively use as a hybrid parent. Plant takes years to bloom, placing in bright light will encourage blooms sooner but decrease leaf size and may loose their silvery color. Plant grows well mounted once leaves reach about 1/2 mature size.

Five plants in 2” pots. Re-potted in 4” plastic pots with phalaenopsis bark mix. One tiny “extra” plant kept in 2” pot.
Keep in shade and moist at all times.
Jan. 8, 2014. Many mistakes done, only (1) 2” plastic pot left. Hopefully this one will live.
-Jan. 2015: last plant perish from overwater by caretaker when on trip.
