The poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima), one of the most popular winter holiday plants, is a native to the area around Taxco, Mexico. Joel R. Poinsett, the first United States ambassador to Mexico, introduced it into the United States. In Mexico, poinsettias grow to be large woody shrubs, often reaching heights above 10 feet.

HEIGHT X SPREAD: 12 inches x 20 inches

PLANT TYPE: Shrub-Evergreen
GROWTH RATE: Moderate
TEXTURE: bold
LIGHT: full sun to part shade

WATER: medium, dry between waterings.

SOIL: soil mix loose and porous
As observed in Coastal NC.

BLOOMS: characterized by small, inconspicuous flowers (cyathia) and large, brightly colored, leaf-like bracts. This one, with white/cream bracts.

FRUIT  AND  SEED: leafy cuttings during early to mid-August. Cuttings should be about 4 inches long and may be rooted in any pasteurized media. Cuttings will root in about three to four weeks 


KEY FEATURES: green soft leaves that transition into color at the tips.

Obtained as a 4” pot plant in bloom for the Christmas holiday.
Early spring, removed flowers/ trim and re-pot in large clay pot and place outdoors in preparation for the next holiday season.
