'Splash' is a striking erect heliconia with a flower that gets as much as 3 feet long!  It is a large plant, banana like type leaves about 8-10 feet tall. Flowers are fat orange bracts with blood red spots.  The spots sometimes coalesce into blotches, and the rachis is typically red.

A fast grower can make a space feel like the tropics in a short time.

Requires warm temperatures a high humidity and moist soil.

HEIGHT X SPREAD: tall

PLANT TYPE: Evergreen tropical
GROWTH RATE: fast
TEXTURE: bold
LIGHT: Grows in partial shade to full sun.

WATER: moist, well drained 


SOIL: Metromix, keep moist but well drain.
As observed in Coastal NC.

BLOOMS: Yellow with red bloches. Blooms primarily from May through August

FRUIT  AND  SEED: N/A, propagate by  division.


KEY FEATURES: large green oval, banana plant style .

-Short life due to 4 1/2 feet of water flood during hurricane Irene 08/2011
-The glasshouse theme after the flood is “Hanging plants”- avoid soil. 
Mostly epiphytes, no place to replace this plant, however it is tempting the flowers are very pretty and will provide a good tropical feel.
