Tropical placed in a large planter to create a tropical forest feel, provide shade and color to complement the new orchids that are now hanging in the glasshouse.


 Heliconia rostrata blooms in late spring and early summer, and its pendulous, waxy inflorescences can last for weeks on the plant. The plants grow to about 8 feet (2.4 m) tall and look quite similar to banana plants.

GROWTH RATE: fast
TEXTURE: bold
LIGHT: sunny

WATER: moist, well drained 


SOIL: Metromix, keep moist but well drain.
As observed in Coastal NC.

BLOOMS: flowers pendulous red with red margins

FRUIT  AND  SEED: N/A, propagate by  division.

-Short life due to 4 1/2 feet of water flood during hurricane Irene. (08/2011)
-The glasshouse theme after the flood is “Hanging plants”- avoid soil. 
Mostly epiphytes, no place to replace this plant, however it is tempting the flowers are very pretty and will provide a good tropical feel.
