Orchid - Phalaenopsis schilleriana

                                      ID#613

This plant came without  identification.

The type/cultivar is my best guess at this writing. There are many hybrids so the flower I may have to wait and see.

It needs full shade and high humidity, as well as kept moist year round. If the plant’s conditions aren’t quite right, the silver mottling of the leaves begins to fade somewhat.

HEIGHT X SPREAD:

PLANT TYPE: Orchid -Evergreen
GROWTH RATE: Moderate
TEXTURE: bold
LIGHT: filtered light, only.

WATER: moist well, drained,
high humidity 60-70 %

SOIL: Pot in bark or well drain media.
Silvery air roots should remain unburried.
Mounted vertically prevents water in crown.
As observed in Coastal NC.

BLOOMS: The clouds of 3” – 4” lightly fragrant flowers appear on a 3’ inflorescence in the summer and early autumn. They are deep pink with some light spotting of red on the sepals and petals, intensifying towards the centre and throat.

FRUIT AND SEED: N/A, propagate by division.

KEY FEATURES: leaves are mottled purple and silver/green, very attractive.
A year cycle in the life of ...... at Mooring Hitch

Potted in plant in wood basket with moss. Overwatering during winter I removed the moss and replaced some with orchid bark mix.
The basket was later mounted in wood trellis D. Plant is doing well now that I know a bit more about it’s moisture preferences.
* July 2012, plant deteriorated, removed from mount and re-pot with Phal. bark mix in 4” clay pot.
Plant did not survive my multi-changes. I continue to learn.
New plant : Jan 30, 2013. Seedling received in small bag with moss from Malaysia. Potted in 2” plastic pot with small orchiata mix.
