The Rio Red a relatively new variety was introduced in 1984. It has few to no seeds, and is more vigorous and hardy than the Star Ruby and the fruit is sweeter than the Ruby Red.


Grapefruits and Pummelos develop the best tasting fruit in areas with warm summer temperatures.  In areas with cooler climates, these types of citrus species often tend to have slightly thicker rinds.

Dwarf trees produce normal size fruit.

HEIGHT X SPREAD: 8 - 12  ft x 4 ft

PLANT TYPE: Fruit Tree- Dwarf/Tropical
tolerates to 28 F degrees.

GROWTH RATE: Moderate
TEXTURE: bold
LIGHT: Full sun- part shade
WATER: medium, let surface dry before water. 
Do NOT like wet feet.
SOIL: well drain soil mixture slightly acid. Repot with fresh soil every 1-3 yrs. to maintain root health.

BLOOMS: early spring, small white blooms with yellow centers at the tip of branches

FRUIT  AND  SEED: fruit in winter, needs heat to sweeten.Citrus are self pollinating.

KEY FEATURES: Popular red-fleshed sport recently introduced from Texas. It is more tolerant of cold than other varieties. Thorns in young plants.

    Potted in a 16” clay pot, upper roots just beneath the soil level.
Tree flowered in June, 2010. Tiny fruit fell off shortly after.
Fertilized with Miracid (30-10-10)  plus liquid Iron every two weeks during winter.
Glasshouse temperatures has been above 48F. 
Few older leaves have yellow patches, curve in. Perhaps too much water. weather has been overcast, damp/rain and cold.
02/12/11 multi branch flowers are forming and ready to open.
