All privets fall into the olive family, Oleaceae. There are about 50 species in genus Ligustrum, mostly native to Asia and Australia, with a few exceptions in Europe and North Africa. This species is credited to Carl Thunberg, 1743-1828, who first identified the many of the plants of Japan while there as physician of the Dutch East India Company. It is native to Japan, Korea and in the northern Chinese mainland.
