A herbaceous upright small heliconia, indigenous to the Amazon rainforest Heliconia psittacorum flowers are actually highly modified leaves and bracts growing up to no more than four feet tall.


In the American Tropics, hummingbirds are the exclusive polinators of red, yellow , pink and orange heliconias while nectar feeding bats are the polinators of green heliconias.

Plant received in large plastic pot. Repotted in ceramic pot with same soil. Removed a small portion of rhizomes into a second pot to share with Pam & Marcus come spring when lant can go back outdoors.

HEIGHT X SPREAD: wide spread of 4 ft. tall

PLANT TYPE: evergreen tropical
GROWTH RATE: Fast
TEXTURE: bold
LIGHT: filtered light, tolerates sun.

WATER: medium, moist but not wet. High humidity 60-70 % is fine.

SOIL: highly organic mix, moisture retention.
As observed in Coastal NC.

BLOOMS: Orange with a slash or green/black on the tips. Up right at the end of  2 feet stems. Proliferous during summer.
FRUIT  AND  SEED: by division of rhizomes

KEY FEATURES: Tropical with lush foliage and a splash of orange blooms.
