5  ounces   unsweetened chocolate (5 squares)

2/3  cup   butter

1 3/4  cups  sugar

2  teaspoons  vanilla

3  whole  eggs

1  cup  all-purpose flour

1  cup  chopped nuts

6  ounces  semisweet chocolate chips (1 cup),  if desired

     

1  recipe  chocolate frosting  (optional)

Heat oven to 350 F degrees. Grease  square pan 9x9x2 inches.

1. Heat chocolate and butter over low heat, stirring frequently, until melted; remove from heat. Cool slightly.

2. Beat sugar, vanilla and eggs in large bowl on high speed 5 minutes.

3. Beat in chocolate mixture on low speed.

4. Beat in flour just until blended.

5. Stir in nuts and chocolate chips if desired.

6. Spread batter in pan. Bake 40 to 45 minutes or just until brownies begin to pull away from sides of pan, do not over cook, this brownies tend to be dense and dry. Cool completely. Spread with Chocolate Frosting (see recipe under Fillings and Frostings) if desired.

NOTES : 1)  Brownies tend to be heavy and dry, do not overcook.
