Tips: Cookies are softer than Covered Surprise Cookies.

2/3 cup Crisco vegetable shortening
1 1/2 cups light brown sugar firmly packed
1 tablespoon water or maraschino cherry juice
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 whole eggs
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup Hershey's cocoa
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups Hershey's semi-sweet chocolate chips (12 oz.)
1. Heat oven to 375 F degrees
2. Combine shortening, brown sugar, water and vanilla in large bowl. Beat at medium speed with electric mixer until well blended.
3. Beat eggs into creamed mixture.
4. Combine flour, cocoa, baking soda and slat. Mix into creamed mixture.
5. Stir in chocolate chips.
6. Drop rounded measuring tablespoonfuls 2" apart onto ungreased baking sheet. Bake one sheet at a time at 375 F degrees for 7 to 9 minutes or until cookies are set. Cool 2 minutes on baking sheet.
7. Place sheets of foil on counter top. Remove cookies to foil to cool completely.
VARIATION: Cherry Surprise.
1. Place a whole maraschino cherry in the center of each cookie as they come out of the oven.
2. Prepare chocolate frosting by melting chocolate chips then adding as you mix some cherry juice enough to make a smooth spreading consistency. Melted chocolate will become hard as you add the juice , keep adding until it soften again
NOTES : Makes about 3 dozen cookies.
