2 1/4  cups  all purpose or unbleached flour, see note (1)

1/2  cup  sugar

1/2  cup  firmly packed brown sugar

1/2  teaspoon  baking soda

1/2  teaspoon  salt

1/2  teaspoon cinnamon

1/4  teaspoon  nutmeg

1  cup  vegetable shortening

1/2  cup  peanut butter

1/4  cup  applesauce

1/2  teaspoon  vanilla extract

1  whole  egg

1  cup rolled oats

3  tablespoons   grape jelly

1. Heat oven to 350 F degrees.

2. Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup; level off.

3. In large bowl, combine all ingredients except 1 cup flour, oats and jelly; mix well.

4. Stir in reserved 1 cup flour and oats.

5. Shape into 1-inch balls; place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Flatten in crisscross pattern with fork dipped in sugar. Place 1/8 teaspoon jelly on center of each cookie.

6. Bake at 350 F degrees for 12 to 14 minutes or until light golden brown.

NOTES : 1) May substitute for Self Rising Flour, omit baking soda and salt.
