A genus from central  and south America. Stanhopea is noted for its complex and usually fragrant flowers that are generally spectacular and short-lived. Their pendant inflorescences are noted for flowering out of the bottom of the containers in which they grow, lending themselves to culture in baskets that have enough open space for the infloresence push through. They are sometimes called upside-down orchids.

HEIGHT X SPREAD: large leaves PLANT TYPE: Orchid -Evergreen GROWTH RATE: Moderate TEXTURE: bold LIGHT: medium filtered (50%) WATER: keep moist, water daily in summer. No winter rest needed. high humidity 60-70 % SOIL: best grown in hanging basket. similar to vanda’s care.
As observed in Coastal NC. BLOOMS: creamy/ yellow with two distinctive eye like brown spots. downward spike with 3 blooms at a time. Short lived blooms 3-5 days, but repeater bloomer throughout the summer. FRUIT AND SEED: N/A, propagate by division. KEY FEATURES: round pseudobulbs with one large leaf with pleads emerging at center. Inflorecsence grows from the bottom of the pseudobulb and hangs down.
A year cycle in the life of ...... at Mooring Hitch Plant purchased in 6” wooden basket/w metal hanger, bark and perlite medium. Water everyday during summer and a bit less during winter. Plant continues to grow all year round. Jan. 2015: (1)6” wood basket with original bark mixture. Doing well, water as vandas, almost daily. Jan. 2016: leaves dry out during summer hot spell. recovering well, new growth, may need water twice a day in summer. Feb. 2017: (1) Plastic Basket 6” with S. moss. New growth and many healthy roots. March 2021: Dead
