Maxillaria is a large and diverse genus ranging from miniature to large plants.

Maxillaria sanguinea resembles a compact Max. tenuifolia with 3/4" oval bulbs on an ascending rhizome topped with thin 10" grassy green leaves, numerous short basil flower spikes carry a single 1" bright reddish brown bloom with an intense wine red lip tipped with white, fragrant and easy to grow.

high humidity 60-70 %
SOIL: grows well in plastic pot with moss or fine Paph. mix.
As observed in Coastal NC.

BLOOMS: bright reddish brown bloom with a intensive red lip tipped with white. Fragrant. Free flowering.

FRUIT  AND  SEED: N/A, propagate by  division.


KEY FEATURES:showy pseudobulbs with fine long blade shape leaves.
A year cycle in the life of ...... at Mooring Hitch

One plant received in 3” plastic pot with S. moss. Later mounted in Fern Board.
-Second plant received Dec. 15, 2012 bare-root, placed in 2” pot with sm. orchiata mix. Later mounted:wood trellis A, (4X,4Y) just below cross point, with moss and coconut fiber top.(Dec. 31, 2012). 3/25/13 removed from trellis and placed in 3” plastic pot with sphagnum moss.
-Third plant Feb. 2013, received flowering in 2.5” pot with moss. Unchanged.
-January 2014:(1) 4” aircone pot. All plants, left placed in one pot. plants seems stable but not yet adding growth.
Sept. 2015: Dead ?, can not figure out what it wants.
