I received this typical potted plant one Christmas, I kept it alive planted in my yard during summer and winter over in the small greenhouse where it display beautiful blooms for the holidays for several years. I made cuttings to share with the same friend that gave it to me and many others.

The first winter of my Glasshouse, these large plants made the place full of color.

HEIGHT X SPREAD: 12- 15 inches x 20 inches Larger in native Mexico or frost free weather

PLANT TYPE: Shrub-Evergreen
GROWTH RATE: Moderate
TEXTURE: bold
LIGHT: filtered light, only.

WATER: medium to dry. Likes humidity but not wet soil.

SOIL: porous and well drain
As observed in Coastal NC.

BLOOMS: insignificant tiny yellow flower  with a bright red display of surrounding red bracts.

FRUIT  AND  SEED: cuttings.


KEY FEATURES:soft dark green,  milky sap when detached from stem.
Trim, re-pot in 10” clay pot and place outdoors during frost free weather. Pinch until August 15th to ensure holiday flowers. Bring indoors when weather becomes cooler than 50 F.

Last pinch to outdoor plants for winter blooms is August 15th.

After many years of producing plants cuttings I lost all plants during hurricane flood in August 20011. I will replace the plant some day, for now I have added other cultivars but not this “Traditional” one.
