This symmetrical plant supports a crown of shiny, dark green leaves on a thick shaggy trunk that is typically about 20 cm (7.9 in) in diameter, sometimes wider. Semi-glossy leaves, are coarse.

A extremely slow grower  can live 50- 100 yrs. and develop a  20 ft. trunk, however often seen with a short base that resembles a pineapple.

*Frost damage at temperatures below 14 °F

LIGHT: grown outdoors in warm temperate and subtropical regions, or under glass in colder areas.
Grows well in full sun or outdoor shade, but needs bright light when grown indoors.

As observed in Coastal NC.

BLOOMS: male or female plants. Tall cones on male plants, round flat with seeds on females.

A year cycle in the life of ...... at Mooring Hitch

Plant is extremely poisonous to animals (this includes humans) if ingested

Clay pot with metromix. Plant tolerates the high humidity kept in the glasshouse for the benefit of the orchids.
Kept away from mister drips. Grown in glasshouse with 50% shade in summer.
Plant was in flooded glasshouse august 2011, it has not grown but looks not affected by flood.
Plant is hardy at my location: planted in West yard circle bed between Bed #2 & Bed #3, ornamental tree died, spot is too wet, I think palm can take it. Cleaned plant/ sray with soap for heavy scale.(Spring 2013)
