Orchid - Cyc. Wine Delight "Jem"

Orchid - Swan

ID#610

Cyc. = Cycnodes

Cycnodes are deciduous orchids and lose every leaf every year. They look totally dead during the winter then start to grow rapidly in the spring. During their hibernation they should be totally ignored.They should be put in a area where they will get very little if any water and no fertilizer.

I will know next time around.

A year cycle in the life of ...... at Mooring Hitch
This plant, along with 24 others where given to me by my neighbor, the previous owners “The Cochran’s” which I never met moved out of town and no longer could care for them. About half of the Collection still had plant name/description and sometimes nursery of origin. Very helpful information to guide me into their care.
So my education begins.....

Plant came in a plastic 4x4x2” basket without any medium, i.e no bark, moss or anything inside but the plant’s roots dangling.
-Good growth of leaves spring 2011, however during winter the bulbs deteriorate and started to rot. Perhaps too much water.
-Salvage attempt: cut tip of bulb, seal with rooting hormone and place in clay pot with bark (04/2012). Cutting rot.
I was unsuccessful in keeping this plant alive.
