Additional Information: Purchase seeds at Williams Garden Center. Merritt, NC

Ferocactus also called Echinocactus come in many varieties of sizes, thorn patterns etc.

I do not know which kind is this one.

I planted a envelope of “mix cactus seeds” and only one seed sprout, this very plant.


Very tiny at first and a slow grower the plant I estimate started around Fall 2007 when I got my first greenhouse (photo below).

TEXTURE: coarse /  long thorns

LIGHT: Full sun
WATER: Dry, well drain. Do not wet the body, just the soil.

SOIL: 1/2 compost: 1/2 gravel-rock
As observed in Coastal NC.

BLOOMS: ?, None so far.


FRUIT  AND  SEED: N/A


KEY FEATURES: New thorn are bright red with a fussy white base as if wrapped in delicate cotton. Bright green fleshy body , it looks good all year around.
A year cycle in the life of ...... at Mooring Hitch

    Grown from purchase mix seeds, Fall 2007. This plant keeps growing and looking good with little care. It has been moved to a larger pot 3 times. The last time potted in 1/2 compost: 1/2 rock. It drains very well and only get water at the base.

-Rotted due to excess shade and humidity. DISCARDED January 29, 2024
Plant never bloomed.
