This plant is also know as Calathea amabilis “Burle Marx” (Prayer plant).


Striking leaf pattern is usually grown as a house plant, sometimes problematic because it likes high humidity. The glasshouse will be perfect if the plant can tolerate high temperatures.

PLANT TYPE:  Evergreen - tropical. Optimal temp. above 59F
GROWTH RATE: Moderate
TEXTURE: bold

LIGHT:  light shade to part or full shade

WATER: moist, high humidity. Mist or place water/rock plate under plant.

SOIL: humus- peat- loosely. Organic
As observed in Coastal NC.

BLOOMS: white/ near white. Summer time


FRUIT  AND  SEED: flowers are sterile, no seeds. Divide by rhizomes or cuttings


KEY FEATURES: grown for the spectacular leaf pattern green and cream with redish purple stems.
A year cycle in the life of ...... at Mooring Hitch

    Plant has tolerated well the few days that temperature inside the Glasshouse drop to 49F. I fertilize it about every two weeks.

Plant perish either by hurricane flood or ceramic orchid pot not having a proper drain hole at the bottom preventing water to drain properly. Fixed pot problem, may replace plant eventually.
