Phragmipedium besseae is a beautiful red orchid with excellent color and shape.  Its bright red color is actually carried on a fuzzy layer above the tepals; the yellow flavum form lacks the red pigment so that the underlying color shows through.

HEIGHT X SPREAD: becomes larger with time
PLANT TYPE: Orchid -Evergreen
GROWTH RATE: Moderate
TEXTURE: fragile blooms
LIGHT: filtered light, only.

WATER: moist but well  drained, 
high humidity 60-70 %. Can be place outdoor in summer. Very sensitive to salts accumulation, fertilize lightly.
SOIL: recommended media: rockwool chunks.
Hold lots of water and provide root air space.
In nature plant grows around moss.
As observed in Coastal NC.

BLOOMS:orange blooms with inner pouch cream color. About 4.5”W x 3.5”H. Spring, Summer and Fall. Multile blooms, do not cut stems until they dry out. Blooms drop after  1-2 weeks, follow ed by new ones.
FRUIT  AND  SEED: N/A, propagate by  division.

KEY FEATURES:beautiful bright color flowers. 
A type of Lady slipper of the Phragmipedium genus. Hybrid.  Plants usually flower at 2 yrs. of age.

Plant purchased in a 4” plastic pot with bark or orchiata, unknown. Recommended to re-pot every other year. Plant purchased in bloom with a second bud yet to open.
Consider Rockwool as media for re-potting.
