Encyclia produce terminal leaves from thickened pseudobulbs and apical inflorescences. Encyclia does have one distinguishing feature, instead of pointing downward like other orchids, Encyclia’s lip sticks up. As a result, the plants are often called the “Upside down orchids”.

Care is similar to cattleyas or epidendrums

As observed in Coastal NC.

BLOOMS:   small. 0.5 to 0.75 inches. spike emerges from the pseudobulb and bear 4 or 5 flowers. Color is yellow, green/ brownish. Winter blooming.


FRUIT  AND  SEED: N/A, propagate by  division.

KEY FEATURES: E. amanda  has rugose pseudobulbs enveloped basally by several imbricating, scarious sheaths carrying 2 or sometines 1 apical ligulate leaves

Purchased in 2 1/2” square plastic pot with bark and totally cover in green growing moss. On spike.
Dec. 11, 2015 first blooms open.
Jan. 22, 2016: (1) 2.5” plastic pot, still in bloom.
Feb. 2017: (1) clay 4”/O, two spikes in bloom.
July 2018: (1) 4.5” tall clay pot with ceramic beads and sponge rock only.
